Mike Shaw graduated in 1968 from Texas A&M with a B.B.A. degree, where he had been a member of the Corps of Cadets and a Distinguished Military Student and Graduate. It was in college that he was first recognized for his leadership abilities. After serving as an army officer in Vietnam, he applied his leadership skills to a lifetime of leadership in business and community service, but in his much-honored endeavors in both areas, he never forgot to appreciate the education he got at Texas A&M. Mike showed his gratitude by generously contributing to the 12th Man Foundation, Mays Business School, and Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine, various capital fund projects and is a member of the Chancellor’s Century Council. He financially supports the A&M Clubs in San Antonio, Denver, and Corpus Christi and attends A&M athletic events.
His appreciation of the importance of a great education drove him to support many service projects that helped youth, especially disadvantaged youth, get an education by taking a leadership role and contributing time and money. In return, the organizations he helped honored him for his efforts. The respect for his community leadership, business acumen, and success was reflected in numerous national and dealership titles and awards, culminating in his being the first minority auto dealer to be named by Time Magazine Dealer of the Year (2012) in the nation.
Mike Shaw is a self-made entrepreneur who began working in the automobile business while attending graduate school. He currently owns and operates two dealerships in Texas: Mike Shaw Toyota and Mike Shaw Kia in Corpus Christi. He also owned a Honda dealership in San Antonio and a Buick GMC dealership in Robstown. Previously, he had a Subaru dealership, a Chevy Buick Saab dealership, and a Buick-GMC dealership in Colorado. He has been a previous dealer in Louisiana, where he owned a Honda dealership in Slidell. He has served on the Toyota National Dealer Council as the Dealer Diversity Representative, the Gulf States Toyota Dealer Council, and other dealer councils and national advisory boards for General Motors, Chevrolet, GMAC, and SAAB. He was a member of the Economic Advisory Council for the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank.
As a business leader with high standards of personal integrity and respect for his employees, he has a lengthy list of honors as the Best Dealership to work for per Automotive News Women’s Choice Award Winner, Automotive News Dealer of Distinction, and the NAMAD Distinguished Service Award, all in 2013. In 2012, the Denver Hispanic Chamber of Commerce named him Business Man of the Year. Earlier, he was a finalist for the Colorado Ethics in Business Award. Very early in his history of owning dealerships, he received the Jack Smith Leadership Award from General Motors, the highest award General Motors gave to a car dealer.
Other community service organizations received his financial and leadership support, such as the South Texas Charity Quail Hunt, Adams County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, and the tuition assistance gala for St Mary’s Academy, St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation Board, Kempe Children’s Foundation, Girl Scouts, the El Pomar Foundation, and National Jewish Medical and Research Center.
Currently, he sits on The Governor’s University Research Initiative (GURI), where he aims to help Texas public institutions of higher education recruit distinguished researchers from around the world to the State of Texas. For Texas A&M University, he also sits on the Mays Business School Dean’s Advisory Board.
